Galliform birds are common and diverse in tropical and subtropical savannas in both Asia and Africa.

However, a surprising difference between the Indian subcontinent and Africa is the large body-size of Pavo cristatus.

This raises the question of whether there is a general pattern, across all genera and spp., of superior body mass in India compared to the latitudinally most-similar parts of Africa.

AIMS

In this Post, I investigate the anomalous occurrence of a massive galliform bird in the Indian subcontinent by focussing on one study area on each landmass, with particular similarity in

  • latitude (about 23 degrees 40 minutes), and
  • vegetation (savannas, with patches of forest/thicket).
