Australasian marsupials have radiated into surprisingly diverse forms despite all retaining a single mode of reproduction by means of foetal birth. This pattern is paralleled by the coexisting ‘treefrogs’ which likewise have diversified (see the remarkable range of body shapes in these photographs) more than any other genus of amphibians on Earth while remaining surprisingly conservative in their larval stage.
