Habitat specialisation by spotted hyena for treeless grassland
The spotted hyena is, worldwide, the only large carnivore specialised for treeless grassland on plains. Its current success in woodlands in national parks and game reserves is largely the artificial result of alleviation of the foraging competition with humans that has limited its habitats over evolutionary time.
