Wildebeests achieve conspicuousness by means of gloss and anti-gloss of the hair rather than pigmentation, and their use of sheen is extremely varied. For example, white-bearded wildebeests are unique among mammals in relying on back-lighting to produce what is effectively a pale blaze noticeable from hundreds of metres away.
